Responding to humanitarian needs in a pandemic situation SSG

India, just like the world, is no exception to the current pandemic that has impacted society and its economy in an incredibly challenging manner. What started out as a virus of the East soon became a disaster for the entire world in just a few weeks. Today the world is coupled with another disaster since the devastating Spanish flu of 1918. While the world has seen other epidemics like HIV, Ebola, and others since the last forty years, this unique virus has impacted us in a way never expected before – a virus that spreads like fire and so far no treatment in sight.

One of the biggest challenges that are visible today in our country is the lower level incomes group who survive on daily wages, or low monthly incomes that come through maids, cleaners, drivers, etc. Besides the daily wage labourers who have families in villages, such a group of people have migrated with their families into larger cities for better sustainability options for themselves and their families.

Unfortunately, the condition of survival today has been difficult. Unless they are accepted back to work in the disorganized sector, their challenges will not end as soon as the lockdown is over. The middle and upper class of society is now deeply worried of bringing them back into their homes and environments due to a fear of them being carriers of the virus. On the one hand, people dearly want their household staff to manage their homes; on the other hand, there is a fear of being exposed to the infection. Many such people have been asked not to come to work for a few months already.

Shishu Sangopan Griha is a foundation that works in Delhi focussing on sustainable and constructive care for a single parent-led families or children living with kin families surviving in extremely challenging conditions. Delhi has thousands of children living with single parents or kin families who are the most affected in such circumstances – already bereft of a core family member due to death or desertion, and such caregivers have no option but to turn to the government for support. In normal times, these families were already families in crisis; COVID 19 has only made it worse and challenging.

Talking to the Executive Director of Shishu Sangopan Griha, Mr. Himadri De, he says, “Often the biggest challenge isn’t the actual problem as problems continue to exist in life. The challenge is enlarged when empathy goes missing, and one is left to fend for oneself at the mercy of people, often living below survival levels, extremely exposed to various forms of neglect every day. COVID has only made it worse for such children and families as they have lost whatever limited options they had for survival.”

The people of Delhi have responded in different ways to the needs of their people, which is positive – however, is that sufficient for a huge population of millions in need; and for such families who are quite fragile and unable to compete with healthier families to receive humanitarian aid.

According to Himadri De, one of the primary misconceptions that remain ingrained in our society is to give donations in kind for the poor people – a form that has survived through generations inspired by various social and religious beliefs and remains highly prevalent. The concept of giving has not changed in the 21st century. This is mainly influenced by our own satisfaction of providing a concrete product that can alleviate misery. There is both a sense of fulfilment of the ‘privileged’ giving to the poor, and a sense of mistrust of the poor people and their ability to make the right decisions for using money.

COVID 19 has majorly seen just that – the giving in-kind which has remained very limiting to the need of many. Through April 2020, Shishu Sangopan Griha has received urgent calls for milk for babies and children, for medicines for the elderly and chronically ill, for toiletries for families, and other such core needs. While food remains crucial for survival, it is not the only component of survival.

Himadri De states, “While rations may be handed out to the needy people, what donors forget is that cooking gas cylinders don’t last forever – you can’t cook if you don’t have fuel! Rationality should make us realize that every individual must have a sense of self-respect to buy what is needed for themselves rather than to depend on hand outs, and most people should be assumed to be rational enough to make the right choices of what is crucial for their family’s survival.”

Shishu Sangopan Griha has worked to support close to 2000 people through the month of April 2020. Some caring people like Sudhir Arya CEO of American Counsel for Education, Sanyogita Kapoor, Anjali Browne, Family Rizatto, and others made an investment into the lives of families at this time of real need through financial resources because they realized food alone wasn’t the answer to the problems that exist.

Himadri De concludes, “While we enter lockdown 3, the question is not about when the lockdown will end, but about when these families will be able to get back to work to provide basic needs for their children and themselves. The actual ground needs are the last mile needs – the micro-environment that must be empathized with thorough practical solutions, because it is we together along with our micro-environment of such challenged families, that make up the larger macro world of our country.

I am really proud of my small but highly effective team of motivated young ladies who joined me by risking their own health to ensure they reached out to the people as a strong, enthusiastic team – Momita Roy Choudhury, Ravina Bhalla, Neha Sharma, and Akhrole Mathew.”

Mr. Arpit Kothari, a 19 year old entrepreneur has recently helped two underprivileged young people to create their own business of Social Media Marketing namely, Imperial Marketing. Mr. Arpit Kothari has studied from some prestigious institutions of India, like Sarala Birla Academy, Bangalore and Raj Kumar College, Raipur. He is currently in HR College, Mumbai.

Arpit Kothari belongs to a respected and a well-established family who are in Real Estate and Constructions Business, etc, yet he wishes to create an empire of his own in the Education, Health and Real Estate sector.

“Ambition drives my approach, I model my business and strategy based on the many success stories of companies including Microsoft, Google, Apple and others. Succeeding in developing a company with strong international influence is always part of my ambition.” says Arpit Kothari.

“I continue to pursue my studies in parallel in order to perfect my knowledge of entrepreneurship, nevertheless, certainly this double “cap” will become more and more useful as time progresses,”, says Arpit Kothari

He also believes that family is the most important part of a person’s life. He has helped many young people establish their startups by investing in them and connecting them with his network of people.

He is a luxury fashioner as much as a gentleman he is. He owns one of the most expensive mobile number available in India. Arpit is also multi-talented. He excels in playing musical instruments and he is also good at sports. Writing and poetry are also his passion. He is a young entrepreneur who believes that there is no alternative to hard work.

“People often ask me what is the best way to get rich. To this question, I answer: "It depends." There are several factors that will determine it. This includes your approach, attitude, available cash, your income, the health of your credit, the inventory of the sector in which you wish to invest, your personality as well as your objectives, to name a few. Those who have managed to build a fortune have achieved this by becoming experts in their respective fields. They excelled in a very specific niche.
He has a plan of starting a NGO for differently abled kids and women. He has also been interviewed many times and featured in newspapers.
“There are 1001 ways to be successful. What will your niche be? What will you focus on in order to become an expert in the field? You will be able to find out by testing some of the different approaches. Afterwards, try to exploit the niche that you like most, hoping that it will be the one in which you are most comfortable and most profitable.” says Arpit Kothari.

Most entrepreneurs face the difficulty of effective leadership. “A successful leader is above all a conductor, supposed to organize by delegating as much as possible”, says Mr. Arpit.
Mr. Arpit has an excellent tip for upcoming entrepreneurs
You want to create? Your idea seems excellent to you but your friends dissuades you from it because it is not the moment, not the good conjuncture, you are too young, too much, not enough here! Listen, analyze… but if your project always seems realistic to you, then go for it.
Another suggestion, before each decision, take time for reflection. When you are young, you can sometimes be impatient to succeed, stay nuanced so as not to sink into the rush.

Sangeeta Boochra and Silver Centrre is helping more than 5000 village artisans to work from home

The brand is patronized by Her Highness Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II of England, Maharani Gayatri Devi of Jaipur, Royal Family of Patiala, Nizam of Hyderabad, Royal Family of Rajkot, Royal Family of Kota, Wadiyar Dynasty of Mysore, Royal Family of Baroda - the Gaekwad Dynasty, John. F. Kennedy President of United States to Hollywood Celebrities Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Sofia Vergara, Monica Bellucci, Salma Hayek, Audrey Hepburn to Bollywood Celebrities like Deepika Padukone, Aishwarya Rai, Priyanka Chopra, Vidya Balan, Alia Bhatt.

Sangeeta Boochra is the woman behind the Iconic Luxury Heritage Jewellery brand from India – Sangeeta Boochra and Silver Centrre.

Sangeeta Boochra today runs a team of 2000 traditional Karigars and Artisans handpicked from the interiors of India to give shape to her unique designs. Sangeeta Boochra took to the aim of being able to show the brilliance of Indian Jewelry to the world through her creative vision.

Sangeeta Boochra and her team have been providing economic and social stimulus to the underprivileged community since 1998. “I, along with my Father in Law Seth Lalit Kumar Boochra jointly started a programme known as a Community development Programme under which unskilled Rural Poor are made jewellery artisans through community mobilization and skill training. With training and livelihood at their doorstep, fair wages, no exploitation, no child labour, no pollution and no harm to the society,” says Sangeeta Boochra.

Under this program, Artisans and their communities are facilitated for better health, life skill education, sanitation, and other social imperatives. “We also do financing for one daughter’s marriage of an Artisan,” says Sangeeta Boochra.
This initiative by Sangeeta and her team has connected artisans to the world markets. The team also helps the artisan by taking them to all shows and exporting their products to different countries of the world.

“We partner with Government, Civil Societies, NGO’s, etc. Employing Artisans who live in the most remote parts of India with little to no access to transport. The greatest challenge in their lives is commuting to work and back, often resulting in families that live far apart. One of the key differentiators of our model is an artisan’s ability to not only work from home but have business travel to them.” says Sangeeta Boochra.

Through a grassroots network that requires specialized logistical support, the raw material is dropped off at an artisan’s home where they work on the product. To ensure customers receive high-quality products, quality supervisors inspect the production to help ensure a consistent output while tracking progress. These supervisors also provide artisan service to ensure they are not interrupted by the shortage of raw bullion. When completed, the product is picked up at the Artisans doorstep and sent on to the next stage of jewellery making progress.

These networks stretch across 400 villages in India through an intense grassroots network to connect 25,000 artisans.

Sangeeta Boochra / Silver Centrre’s artisans thus have the ability to work from home. More women can work towards financial independence, as they don’t have to navigate commute, especially in remote villages. Artisans decide their own work hours - being able to work around their family’s schedules.

“Artisans will lose no workdays in receiving and transporting material. Traditional Indian communities do not give women the opportunity to work outside the home -Sangeeta Boochra / Silver Centrre’s model provides an easy solution to this,” says Sangeeta Boochra.

He worked relentlessly with the team and learnt all the critical processes to manage serious patients. He didn’t take leaves for months and would always be available during crisis. Today he handles most critical patients independently.

On 24th March, when India announced the first phase of lockdown to fight the COVID-19 crisis, both of them had a huge challenge. How to take care of their patients, given that there won’t be any logistics or support system available. Also in absence of any caregiver these patients would simply die. Sharmistha and Kamalesh and some others in her team volunteered to stay at patient’s place, to provide round the clock care, staying away from home. It’s been over 50 days both of them are continuing without any complaints. They can take credits for saving at least one life during this huge pandemic. They are the new warriors outside the hospitals.

Many healthcare providers had to adapt to the outbreak of the virus and work under several constraints. The hospital system has almost collapsed. With most hospitals and outpatient department closed for patients, it’s a challenge managing health for people who are seriously ill. Buurtzorg, a Dutch modelled, home health care organization has been providing, post hospitalization care, palliative care, nursing care and geriatric care at home. Over 60% of the patients are cortically ill and need round the clock monitoring. It operates with about 100 caregivers in West Bengal, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh. Many of these caregivers migrate from smaller towns to provide this care and stay at hostels provided by the organization.

Providing care was a huge challenge during the time of lockdown.  Carers who were required to travel for their job were not able to. ‘Fear’ and ‘Anxiety’ were two crucial factors in every care givers mind. But, during this unprecedented time BUURTZORG had to respond as they have a duty to their patients.

“We would like to make a mark in the history, as true warriors. These are rare times where you get an opportunity to create your own stories worth re-living” - Devjit Sarkar: CEO

Communication was initiated and everyone was encouraged to acknowledge the crisis and be there for patients during these times. Caregivers responded by volunteering to help and communication was maintained through the use of video chat. Those who returned home were not penalised for their decision and were ensured financial security. Patients were categorized based on need and noncritical patients were looked after by family who were trained to provide care. The remaining patients were looked after by a pair of carers who were adopted by host families so that they could look after patients without traveling. Their accommodation and food arrangements were made by the patients’ families.

In the face of adversity, Buurtzorg India has been able to adapt and continue to provide services amidst this crisis. Their ability to continue providing health care stems from the selflessness of their staff to provide care and volunteer through everything that is going on.
